ISP Merit Board

Promotion

2013 Promotion Process

The Merit Board certifies sworn officer candidates as being qualified for promotion to the Director of the Illinois State Police. Certification for promotion is based on job performance measurement, written examination, assessment exercises (for appropriate ranks) and seniority. All vacancies in ranks above the lowest are to be filled by promotion.

Thorough job analysis studies of the knowledge, skills, abilities and work behavior for each rank are periodically conducted to assure content, validity and compliance with state and federal employment guidelines.

Promotional testing for 2013 will be offered for those officers testing to the rank of Captain and Lieutenant.

Promotional Education Requirement Reminder

Effective January 1, 2003 the Merit Board required any candidate competing for the rank of Lieutenant and Captain to possess a Bachelor's Degree. Click here to read more about the Promotional Education Requirement.
