Discipline

The Illinois State Police Merit Board is responsible for the processes of discipline, removal, demotion and suspension of Illinois State Police sworn officers who violate the rules and regulations of the Illinois State Police.

Disciplinary action afforded the Director of the Illinois State Police includes suspension of not more than 30 days, restitution and written reprimand. In addition to these actions, the Merit Board may remove, demote or suspend an officer for any period exceeding 30 days. Any disciplinary action exceeding three days may be reviewed by the Merit Board in a formal hearing, where the Officer has a right to petition the Merit Board and present evidence which would contest the action taken by the Illinois State Police. The Merit Board may sustain, reduce or reverse any disciplinary action taken.
